About the role
We're looking for an experienced, detail-focused Bookkeeper to manage day-to-day bookkeeping for a portfolio of clients across Australia and/or New Zealand. This is a multi-client role, you'll be looking after several separate client businesses, each with their own books, deadlines and reporting requirements, rather than one company with multiple internal entities. You'll work primarily in Xero, keeping client ledgers accurate and current, meeting compliance deadlines, and building the kind of trust that lets clients hand their books over with confidence. This role suits someone from a bookkeeping practice, accounting firm or outsourced finance background who is used to juggling multiple clients at once, not someone who has only worked in-house for a one business.
Key Responsibilities
Client Bookkeeping
- Manage day-to-day bookkeeping for a portfolio of clients across Australia and/or New Zealand
- Process accounts payable and receivable, and perform regular bank and credit card reconciliations
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date ledgers in Xero for each client
- Reconcile balance sheet accounts and investigate discrepancies
- Prepare and lodge BAS/IAS and GST returns in line with each client's obligations (AU and/or NZ)
- Process payroll, including superannuation (AU) and/or Kiwi
Saver (NZ), where required
Multi-Client Coordination
- Manage multiple client accounts simultaneously, prioritising workload across competing deadlines
- Maintain client-specific checklists, processes and records so nothing is missed
- Track monthly, quarterly and annual compliance deadlines across the full client portfolio
- Flag capacity or timing issues early so workload can be managed across the team
Client Support & Communication
- Communicate directly with clients on bookkeeping queries, records and outstanding information
- Support clients in using Xero well, including best-practice coding and data entry
- Liaise with clients' accountants and advisors on tax and compliance matters
- Respond to client questions promptly and professionally
- Build positive, professional relationships with each client in your portfolio
Process & Compliance
- Keep bookkeeping practices aligned with relevant Australian and/or New Zealand accounting standards
- Ensure statutory deadlines (BAS, GST, payroll, super/KiwiSaver) are met for every client
- Support month-end and year-end processes, including preparation for external accountants
- Identify and help resolve process gaps or recurring errors in client accounts
What We're Looking ForThe right person is organised, accurate and comfortable managing a varied client portfolio. You should have:
- 3–5 years' bookkeeping experience, ideally within a bookkeeping practice, accounting firm or outsourced finance environment managing multiple clients
- Strong, hands-on experience working in Xero
- Experience with Australian and/or New Zealand bookkeeping and compliance requirements (BAS/GST, payroll, super/KiwiSaver)
- Confidence managing several clients' books at once, with strong prioritisation and time management
- Good attention to detail and a methodical approach to reconciliations
- Strong written and spoken English, with clear, professional client communication
Highly Regarded
- Xero certification or Xero Advisor status
- Experience with other accounting platforms (e.g. MYOB, QuickBooks)
- Working knowledge of both Australian and New Zealand compliance frameworks
- Payroll processing experience across AU and/or NZ
- Certificate IV in Bookkeeping/Accounting, or progress toward a relevant qualification
- A proactive, solutions-focused approach to client issues
What Success Looks Like
- Client ledgers are accurate, current and audit-ready
- BAS, GST, payroll and other statutory deadlines are met across the whole client portfolio
- Clients feel supported and confident in their numbers
- Month-end and reporting processes run smoothly for every client
- Nothing gets missed, even across a busy, multi-client workload
Working Hours
You must be available Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm Sydney time (AEST/AEDT).
