ASL Language Specialist (Scoring Assistant)

Employgic is looking for an ASL Language Specialist to join our academic team and help maintain high-quality standards for AI-powered language learning. In this role, you will review and evaluate American Sign Language (ASL) assignments for students in Grades 6–12, providing accurate scores and meaningful feedback on signing accuracy, grammar, fluency, receptive and expressive skills, and Deaf cultural understanding. You will also help evaluate our AI scoring system, Spark, ensuring that its computer-vision-based feedback accurately recognizes ASL production and provides natural, precise, and pedagogically appropriate feedback to students learning ASL.We are looking for someone with strong ASL expertise who understands the specific challenges native English speakers face when learning ASL as a visual-spatial language.

Key Responsibilities

ASL Language Evaluation

Review and score student ASL video assignments. Evaluate handshape, movement, location, orientation, non-manual signals, facial expressions, and spatial use. Assess ASL grammar, sentence structure, fluency, and overall signing accuracy. Evaluate both receptive and expressive ASL skills. Provide clear, constructive, and encouraging feedback appropriate for middle and high school students. Identify common errors made by hearing English-speaking learners of ASL.AI Quality Review

Audit AI-generated scores and feedback from our platform. Review the accuracy of AI/computer-vision evaluation of student signing. Check that AI feedback is accurate, natural, specific, and pedagogically appropriate. Identify errors or inconsistencies in the AI's recognition of ASL features. Help improve AI scoring quality through detailed feedback and error analysis. Curriculum & Regional Variation Review

Review ASL video prompts, rubrics, glosses, and learning materials. Ensure instructional content accurately represents ASL grammar and usage. Account for regional and community variations in ASL when evaluating student responses. Review materials for appropriate representation of Deaf culture and Deaf community norms. Identify content that may unintentionally reflect English-based signing rather than natural ASL.Error Analysis

Identify recurring challenges that English-speaking learners experience when learning ASL, including: English word order transferred into ASLLiteral English-to-ASL translation

• Incorrect use of initialized signs
• Inappropriate English mouth movements
• Incorrect use of non-manual signals
• Misuse of spatial referencing and indexing
• Incorrect classifier use
• Limited or incorrect use of ASL topic-comment structure
• Difficulty using facial expressions and body movement grammatically

Qualifications

ASL Language Expertise

Native or near-native ASL proficiency. Strong command of ASL grammar, syntax, vocabulary, and visual-spatial structure. Deep understanding of classifiers, spatial referencing, indexing, non-manual signals, and ASL discourse. Familiarity with regional and community variations in ASL.Strong understanding of ASL as a second language for native English speakers. Strong awareness and respect for Deaf culture and community norms. English Proficiency

Strong English communication skills. Ability to clearly explain language errors and provide detailed written feedback in English. Understanding of common linguistic differences between English and ASL.Ability to identify when students are transferring English structures directly into their signing. Analytical & Technical Skills

Ability to evaluate student work ranging from basic middle-school vocabulary and sentences to advanced storytelling and conversational signing. Strong attention to detail when reviewing video-based language performance. Comfortable identifying subtle differences in handshape, movement, location, orientation, facial expression, and spatial grammar. Comfortable learning and working with AI-powered educational platforms, video review tools, and digital annotation systems. Typing speed of 60+ WPM.Communication Skills

Patient, encouraging, and empathetic communication style. Ability to provide constructive feedback that helps students improve their ASL skills. Comfortable working with students who may experience anxiety or lack confidence when performing on video. Ability to provide culturally respectful feedback that supports students' development as ASL learners. Nice to Have

Degree or academic background in ASL, Deaf Studies, Deaf Education, Linguistics, Education, or a related field.ASLTA or RID certification or comparable professional credentials. Experience teaching or tutoring ASL.Experience teaching ASL as a second language to native English speakers. Experience with ASL grading, curriculum development, language assessment, or educational technology. Experience working with video-based learning platforms or digital annotation tools.
